boredom

my life outside work bores me. and that is something that scares me.

whenever i leave the school building, i start getting bored. really, really bored.
i have so many lovely people and things to do in my life. i have eleven metres of bookshelves, filled up dozens of books i have not read yet. i have a family (which is always a source of whatever keeps you from just sitting around doing nothing). i could go out and get entertainment or cultural input or whatever else i want to keep me (and my imagination) busy.

but i keep asking myself - nowadays - whether meeting someone i suspect has a completely different horizon than i have, lives in a world very different from mine, made me think about how narrow my world is.. or if unconsciously realizing (is that a contradiction?) that i am bored, created such an urge to change things that i ended up looking for someone to help me do that? or - and i hope this is not true - i just imagine him being so different?

whatever i see, whatever i read, whatever i do, whatever i think, it is always within certain limits. limits which were built up by my surroundings, my education, my experience, my memories. everything seems to be limiting my way of thinking, feeling, experiencing to that world. the world i already know. i used to like that world. i used to think it was actually rather deep and wide and that there was no limit to thought and imagination.

but - nowadays - i suspect myself to be extremely limited by the way i am and the way i am used to think and feel. and it bores me.

could someone please tell me what's wrong with me?

  1. Generally, having limits that influence your thinking and your behavior is a very normal thing, i guess. I even would say it is necessary, for if you wouldn´t have them, reality would be unbearable. Imagine you encounter any problem and instead of following an effective routine to solve it, you consider every possible possibility. you would never reach a conclusion and probably go nuts.Your limits prevent this from happening.
Nevertheless i don´t think your boredom is something unusual. Maybe it is just a sign that you are (unconsciously?) missing something or want something? But if you are unhappy with your limits, why not expand them carefully? no need to go scuba-bungee-jumping or whatever, but maybe small steps? you love baking, why not try to make something entirely different, like spicy chocolate cake (with jalapeño peppers^^)? but i don´t know if that´s helpful. expanding your emotional limits would be harder, i guess...

  2. thanks so much for your contribution/answer! und ich glaub, ich hab's: mid-life crisis! zu dumm, dass mein problem sich vermutlich nicht wirklich durch bungy-jumping oder den kauf eines übertrieben teuren autos lösen lässt... aber immerhin ist's ein ansatzpunkt... oder so...?
